What to Expect
Scale and polish involves removal of plaque and tartar deposits that build up on your teeth over time as well as stains caused by coffee, tea or red wine. Plaque is a pale yellow substance that develops naturally on teeth. As more and more bacteria colonises the plaque layer, it becomes thicker, and gives the furry feeling when your tongue touches your tooth surface. If left alone for more than 48 hours, plaque will mineralise to form calculus, which is hard and sticks onto tooth structure.
Tooth brushing alone would be insufficient to remove calculus. It can only be removed during professional dental scaling and polishing. Calculus left on the tooth structure may eventually lead to periodontal disease and tooth decay.
It is recommended to have a 6 months or yearly scale and polish done by a dental professional to help you maintain healthy teeth and gums.
